Institute History

The Learning and Performance Institute began life in 1995 and since then has grown year on year and continues to grow today.

1995 Began life as the 'Institute of IT Training'
1996 Developed its first accreditation programme, recognising organisations that have demonstrated the ability to meet the Institute standard in the delivery of training and learning services and committed to a programme of continuous performance improvement
1997 Launched the IT Training Awards, a gala ceremony to celebrate outstanding examples of success in IT Training
1997 Launched an annual members conference to share ideas and best practice
1999 RICOH becomes the first organisation accredited by the Institute outside the UK
2001 Expands beyond the UK by opening its first office in Europe
2003 Develops Learning Technologies and Service Provider accreditation
2006 Launches the Learning Directors Network (LDN). A networking group for L&D Directors.
2007 Launches the Trainer Performance Monitoring and Assessment (TPMA) Service - to assess the effectiveness of trainers
2009 Management buyout separates the Institute from NCC
2010 Launches the Certified Online Learning Facilitator (COLF) course, designed to raise standards in live online learning
2010 Membership consultation shows that the majority of members are made up of generic L&D professionals rather than IT specific trainers
2011 Institute re-brands to the Learning & Performance Institute reflecting its more generic L&D membership, its commitment to workplace learning and the impact this can have on organisational performance
2011 Launches the Learning Awards, a gala ceremony to celebrate outstanding success in L&D - the awards take place 2nd February 2012
